Artemisia ‘Canyon Grey’
Artemisia ‘Canyon Grey’
Artemisia is one of those plants that should be on every dry slope within 20 miles of the coast. It tolerates full sun to some shade and requires little maintenance, though a good pruning once a year helps it stay in good shape. Some people say to mow this, my vote is just cut it back pretty hard. Artemisia smells absolutely amazingly wonderful— to me, it is the scent of Chaparral or Coast Sage Scrub (indeed the ‘Sage’ in Sage Scrub is for Sagebrush, not the Salvia Sages). This particular format of Artemisia is a groundcover, while the straight species is an upright shrub that loudly proclaims “Welcome to Southern California”. Plant these against high heat walls or close to a path where you can smell it. Give an occasional watering and it will stay in pretty good shape.
