Bush Anemone

Carpenteria californica

This is a great but hard to find plant. It’s evergreen, garden tolerant, and when it’s in bloom in Spring, it puts on a show. It also is a great size for the garden, staying neat and compact rather than sprawling far and wide like some of our sages. In our yard we use it as a screening shrub to cut down views into our living room. This shrub is a good substitute for Coffeeberry if you’re looking for something a bit showier that’s good for North facing corners. Use ‘Elizabeth’ as a substitute for ‘Eve Case’, otherwise use the straight species as a substitute for regular Coffeeberry. It hails from the Sierra Nevada foothills so I would avoid putting it out in full blasting sun particularly if you live in the valley or inland. Along the Coast it seems to take Part to Full Sun quite well. Smells quite sweet when in bloom, but in a subtle manner. Slow growing so be patient! Use as a Spring time focal plant, but be sure to have other plants to carry interest in the garden in Summer an Fall.
