Catalina Currant
Ribes viburnifolium
Catalina Currant is one of those classic ‘Dry Shade’ plants that you hear about in all the books. Plant this under oaks or other large trees to brighten up a dark corner of your yard with Catalina Currant’s bright, evergreen foliage and tiny red flowers that start appearing in late Winter and early Spring. It’s an unfussy plant that doesn’t require much maintenance or attention, and serves as a solid background plant until it shows its true character and bursts forth with little red blooms.
Plant inward of the shade line of a tree, in dappled light if possible. Direct sunlight will fry this plants foliage, particularly in the hotter months. Catalina Currant slowly spreads out— encourage its spread by using a metal stake for drip tubing to bend some of its upright branching stems to the ground; they’ll root in place and spread laterally in that direction.
