Canyon Sunflower
Venegasia carpesoides
I am currently also, all in on this plant. Advertised as a versatile full sun to full shade sunflower, Canyon Sunflower is a cheerful plant that seems to withstand a variety of circumstances. I still have to see what the long term lifespan of this plant is, but it seems forgiving so far, and honestly, who doesn’t love a bright yellow flower in a shady seciton of their yard? The large leaves with their bright green hue also are handsome. Advertised as needing a bit more water than your average drought tolerant plant. In my yard, I have two— one is in heavily dappled shade with regular drip water and another against a south facing wall, but partially shaded by the pergola and grape for half the year. The one by the south facing wall is hand watered and was installed in July and it managed to make it to Winter (just barely so). Hard to find in nurseries, if you see one, buy one just for the sheer joy of it I’d say. And maybe check in in the 2028 TPF Garden tour with me and ask me how this plant is doing….
