Douglas Iris

Iris douglasiana

This is a relatively new plant in my garden as it’s only been in the ground for about a year. So far so good, though I did kill one from lack of initial watering. Douglas Iris seems quite durable, and as a large drift looks very attractive. Seems to take a bit more sunlight than you’d expect and far more shade as well. Currently it gets water quite frequently; we;’ll see if it tolerates that as well or if it rots out.

Regardless, Douglas Iris has a beautiful bloom and I hope to keep these in my garden. Douglas Iris slowly forms clumps over time and can be divided, creating more plants. Useful under trees that drop a large amount of leaf litter because it’s tall enough to withstand leaf inundation. Douglas Iris comes in a variety of colors ranging from purple, to white to yellow. If Douglas Iris is really your jam, visit Matilija Nursery in Moorpark— the owner is a breeder who specializes in Iris crosses and has quite a few different cultivars and colors that he’s made!
