Dutchman’s Pipevine
Aristolochia californica
This is a weird plant. A climbing vine, deciduous in the winter, with blooms that are shaped to trap a butterfly within so it gets pollinated (the butterfly eventually makes it out, but not after a significant amount of struggle and, advantageously, pollination.) Only one butterfly, the Pipevine Swallowtail, pollinates this plant and that butterfly can only lay its eggs on this plant. They are bound together in life. I grow this on the trellis outside my kitchen door, in a pot. We’ll see how long it lasts, but the blooms are so interesting I can’t help but admire them and respect natures many different adaptations. Dutchman’s Pipevine takes a few years to really get going so plant it and exercise patience.
