Fragrant Pitcher Sage
Lepechinia fragrans
This is the premiere Sage for that weird part of your yard that gets a good amount of shade in the Fall, Winter and early Spring, but then gets a high dose of sun in the summer, particularly if you live in more coastal sites. Inland like Pasadena, Downey or Whittier you may want to site it in more of a dappled shade, or at the edge of the shade line. Fragrant Pitcher Sage is a great plant to have near benches or pathways since it’s common name tells you everything you need to know about it— this plant smells amaaaazzzinnggg. Takes pruning quite well, which it does need once a year. Fragrant Pitcher Sage should be pruned back by about a third, once a year, to encourage denser growth since this plant does like to ramble and drape itself over the landscape. Easy to grow and quite forgiving, but do give it time if you’re growing it in dappled to heavier amounts of shade since that will slow it down. Flowers are particularly well suited to attract hummingbirds. Leaves can be used to brew a tea.
