Desert Globemallow

Sphaeralcea ambigua

You can see why I like this plant. Striking blossoms that scream “I am here, I am beautiful!” and food for all the bees! On the coast like me, this plant is a little difficult to grow since it really wants blazing hot dry conditions all day, everyday. The closet thing I have to that is my parkway, where it excels at high reflected heat and very little water. My only issue with this plant is everyone wants this plant to be tight, compact, and covered with a ton of blooms. In order to have that, you have to prune it, deadhead it, water it, and you can’t let it get to woody. I’ve burned through my initial pair of Globemallows after 4 years and now I’m on Generation 2. My aim is to dial in how to maintain these plants to keep them compact and looking good, but if you’re not ready to do that, then be prepared for a leggy, woody mess after 2-3 years of amazingness. Wear gloves when handling, the fine hairs on this plant can cause a little bit of itchiness. It’s nothing major but if you’re embarking on a journey of pruning like me, then don’t set sail without gloves.
