Red Buckwheat
Eriogonum grande var. rubescens
Red Buckwheat is an excellent small scale plant for coastal gardens. In my experience it does better with shade from the afternoon and a little extra water. The best one I had was by my fountain in the back which was shaded in the afternoon and had a little bit of moisture from the splashing of the fountain. Works well along pathways, borders, pots or tucked into a crevice between some rocks.
Plants last 3-4 years, maybe five tops. The ones you see here today aren’t the originals that I planted. I only planted ten and now I have a million. It will reseed readily, just take the dry seed heads and drop them where you’d like more, in all likelihood you’ll get some that pop up the next year. After year two, start seeding in the next generation so you always have a fresh Buckwheat to take the place of its parents.
