Red Fairyduster
Calliandra californica
This is one of those versatile plants that can grow in many, many yards. When people ask me for a ‘Desert Garden’ I lead with this plant since it has an incredibly long bloom season, beautiful red blossoms, and attracts hummingbirds like nobodies business. It has small, dark green leaves that work well as a background plant that steals the show any time the rest of the garden is putting on a hint of dormancy. Also works well as a large screen or shrubby focal point plant surrounded by low sages or dormant bunchgrasses, perhaps some groundcover sagebrush to give a high level of foliage contrast.
Try to give it good drainage by siting it on a berm if possible since it is a true desert plant and won’t want excess irrigation
