Saffron Buckwheat
Eriogonum crocatum
A small Buckwheat endemic to Ventura County and no where else in California. Stark white foliage white yellow flowers. This is a hard to find Buckwheat so I chose not to plant it in the ground, but rather a pot where I can give it more favorable growing conditions. I have fairly slow draining, heavier, richer soil than this plant would like, so I used a lighter soil mix to grow this in, along with a Dudleya, a Scarlet Bugler and a mix of wildflower seeds. If you can find this plant in the nurseries, get it, I think it’s great as a drift or as a patch in a sunny corner of your yard where you need something low. It’s white foliage will set off all the other colors around it, creating interest even when it’s not in bloom.
