Scarlet Monkeyflower

Erythrathne cardinalis

It is hard not to love this plant. Nuclear orange red flowers in the Spring and Late summer that bring in hordes of hummingbirds and butterflies. Bright evergreen leaves that are cheerful and striking. It can grow in Full Sun to Part Shade. It flowers profusely, particularly with more sun, before dying back to the ground, at which point, cut it back, apply water and wait for the next year. In some situations it will stay alive throughout the summer as long as it has enough water, and when I mean ‘Enough Water’ I mean an absolutely ridiculous amount of water. The only one I’ve ever seen that was growing past the normal ‘Winter Deciduous’ cycle was at Kuruuvunga Springs (also on the TPF Tour) and it was literally growing IN the Spring.

In my yard, I grow it near greywater emitters from my washing machine. It might also work well near veggie beds or lawn areas where overspray will give it extra water. Try growing it in a pot next to your dogs water bowl— whenever you change the water bowl, put it in the pot with this plant and you’ll be surprised how it will flourish.
