Silver Lupine
Lupinus albifrons
This is a hard to find plant that is a local native; I’ve seen this growing up on La Brea right out of the hillsides. It will be interesting to see if this lives in my yard or not. Calscape describes it as “short lived” but I am hoping to either propagate from cuttings off of these plants or by seed if possible since it is a beautiful local native. Given the warnings about summer water and this plant, my plan is to install blanks along the sections of drip so no summer water gets within three feet of this plant. I am also hoping the fact that this plant sits on a bit of a berm also creates favorable conditions for it; in nature I see this on steep slopes. Time will tell if this is the right plant or not!
